Raw Feeding Models

Feeding models

You have two main feeding models. Prey Model Raw (PMR) and Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (BARF). Both are great feeding models to use. We do not have a style preference, but we recommend rotating between the two as they both have their unique benefits. The PMR diet is based on 80% muscle meat, 10% edible bone, 10% organ. BARF is based on 80% muscle meat, 10 % edible bone, 5% organs, and 5% fruits and veggies. It is important to note that you want to feed the fruits and vegetables finely ground – like a puree. This will break down the cellular walls enabling it to be digestible by your furry four-legged friend.

Pre-Made Raw Diets

For new raw feeders or those who want an easy, ready to use raw diet, we recommend our PMR Grinds and Healthy Variety Mix’s (HVM). Our PMR Grinds are our variation of the PMR diet consisting of 70% muscle meat, 15% bone, and 15% organs. Our HVM’s mimic the B.A.R.F. diet of 70% muscle meat, 15% bone, 10% organs, and 5% fruits and veggies. We recommend that you rotate your proteins. Each protein has its unique benefits, and if you stick to one protein or diet, you may be shorting your furry friend all of the nutrients they need for a balanced lifestyle.

Tripe!

Yes, tripe. It stinks, it is green, and is loaded with probiotics and digestive enzymes. Tripe is a great source to support healthy microflora in the gut–thanks to the Lactobacillus acidophilus that green tripe is loaded with. Grass-fed green tripe is also loaded with probiotics and digestive enzymes to support healthy digestion. This means your pup will gain the most nutrition from their meals. We recommend that you feed tripe at least once a week. This stinky green powerhouse can be mixed in with the pre-made raw diets, feed as is, or as a snack. We offer tripe three different ways:

DIY Raw

DIY Raw mainly falls with the PMR style of feeding. We typically recommend this feeding style for those who are established with raw feeding and who do not mind getting their hands dirty. Although this is a great feeding style, if you want complete control of your furry friends’ diet, it can be extremely time-consuming and not so convenient.  We have a long list of products that can help you with your DIY journey. Sometimes, if you can’t locate a certain product on our website, we might have it in stock. Just ask because if we don’t have it, we can most likely help you with sourcing.

Treats

Yum, treats. Who doesn’t like a yummy treat or snack from time to time? Our pups do. Please keep in mind that treats should be fed as that, a treat. Be mindful of how many treats you and your family are feeding daily, as this can spike weight gain. It is also important to have plenty of fresh water readily available. When feeding treats, we recommend that you do not exceed more than 2% of their diet.

Recommended Feeding Amount The question we all have is, how much should I feed daily? We recommend that you feed based on your pet’s activity level and weight.

  • If your pet is very active or needs to gain weight, we recommend feeding 4% of their weight daily.
  • If your pet is moderately active and needs to maintain, we recommend feeding 3% of their weight daily.
  • If your pet needs to lose weight or is less than moderately active, we recommend feeding 2.5% of their weight daily.
